Text Typing in VR using Smartphones Touchscreen and HMD

This work presents a new simple text typing method using a smartphone touchscreen keyboard in immersive virtual environments (IVEs) with HMD. We represented the touchscreen keyboard into the IVE with a virtual interface and visualized fingers where confirm-on-release paradigm was employed for text typing. We carried out an experiment comparing our proposal with the ordinary devices: gamepad and HTC Vive Controllers. Results showed that our proposal was not fastest in terms of WPM but offered fewer errors and mental workload than the other devices.
